Perio Surgery Q & A

Why do I need perio surgery?

Periodontal (perio) surgery is a solution for treating gum disease and restoring your gum and tooth health. Your dentist may recommend perio surgery to:

  • Treat gum infections, including gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Promote bone and tissue growth
  • Reduce gaps between teeth
  • Prevent tooth loss

Gum surgery can also be recommended to reshape your jawbone, so bacteria won’t have as many crevices in which to grow.

Which type of perio surgery do I need?

At the practice of Hyun S. Bang, DDS, you have access to a team of skilled dentists who specialize in modern, minimally invasive perio surgery techniques. Your perio surgery is entirely personalized to you and the severity of your gum disease or condition. It can include:

  • Laser surgery with the Biolase® Epic X™ to remove damaged tissues
  • Flap surgery to remove deep tartar deposits above the gumline
  • Bone or tissue grafting to promote healthy tissue growth

To ensure you’re entirely comfortable, not only does your dentist thoroughly numb your gums, but they can also provide relaxing sedation solutions, such as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas.

The team at Hyun S. Bang, DDS, is dedicated to providing gentle perio surgery to help you achieve optimal oral health.

How long is the recovery after perio surgery?

Since the dentists at Hyun S. Bang, DDS, specialize in minimally invasive perio surgery techniques, your recovery time is minimal. It’s normal to be sore and swollen for a few days as your gums heal.

During this time, it’s important to eat only soft foods and rinse regularly with an antiseptic mouthwash. You may also need to avoid strenuous activities for a few days after perio surgery.

You might be scheduled for a follow-up visit about a week or two after surgery, just to ensure you’re healing properly and to remove any sutures.

Generally, you start noticing an improvement in the health and appearance of your gums within a few weeks with continuing improvements week after week.
